For Children Ages 5-15 | September 2026 to June 2027

Helping Children Build Calm, Confidence & Stronger Learning Skills

At The Mindful Elephant, we believe that children learn best when their mind, body, emotions, and social well-being are supported together.

Our Mindfulness & Creative Expression Program brings together mindfulness, meditation, yoga, journaling, art, weaving, pottery, and hands-on creative experiences to help children develop skills that support them in the classroom, at home, and in everyday life.

Through engaging and age-appropriate activities, children learn how to slow down, pay attention, recognize their emotions, manage challenges, make thoughtful choices, and express themselves creatively.

Our program is aligned with the Ontario Kindergarten Program and the Learning Skills & Work Habits framework reflected in Ontario student report cards, while also supporting the development of important executive-function skills.

Mindfulness & Executive Function

Executive functioning is the collection of skills children use to manage their attention, behaviour, emotions, thoughts, and actions. These skills help children get started on a task, remember instructions, stay focused, manage impulses, organize their work, adapt when plans change, and work through problems.

These abilities are still developing throughout childhood and adolescence. They can also be affected by how a child is feeling and functioning physically. When children are overwhelmed, worried, tired, disconnected, or under stress, it can become harder for them to concentrate, remember, regulate their emotions, or respond thoughtfully.

That is why our approach looks beyond academic skills alone.

We create an environment where children can move, breathe, connect, create, reflect, and learn. These experiences give them repeated opportunities to practice the skills that support learning and everyday independence.

How Mindfulness Supports These Skills

Mindfulness encourages children to notice what is happening in their body, thoughts, and emotions without immediately reacting.

With regular practice, children can begin to recognize:

  • “My mind is wandering.”

  • “I am becoming frustrated.”

  • “I need to slow down.”

  • “I can take a breath before I respond.”

  • “I can try another way.”

  • “I can come back to what I am doing.”

These small moments of awareness become opportunities to practice attention, self-control, emotional regulation, flexible thinking, and thoughtful decision-making.

The goal is not to expect children to always be calm or focused. Instead, we help them develop the ability to notice, pause, reset, and try again.

Learning Through Creativity

Executive-function skills develop through meaningful experiences, not just worksheets or structured exercises.

Creative and hands-on activities provide natural opportunities for children to practice these skills.

When a child plans a pottery piece, follows the steps of a weaving project, experiments with an art technique, participates in a group activity, or works through a challenging design, they are also practicing:

Attention - staying engaged with the process
Working memory - remembering steps and instructions
Planning - thinking about what they want to create and how to begin
Self-control - slowing down and making intentional choices
Flexibility - adjusting when something does not work as expected
Problem-solving - finding another way forward
Persistence - continuing through difficulty
Initiative - making choices and getting started independently

This makes learning active, meaningful, and enjoyable.

A Whole-Child Approach

We understand that children are more than their academic abilities.

Their ability to learn and participate can be influenced by their emotional well-being, relationships, physical activity, rest, sense of belonging, and opportunities to express themselves.

Our program therefore creates space for children to:

  • Develop greater self-awareness

  • Recognize and communicate emotions

  • Practice calming and grounding strategies

  • Strengthen concentration and attention

  • Develop patience and persistence

  • Build confidence through creative expression

  • Practice cooperation and communication

  • Explore problem-solving and flexible thinking

  • Make independent choices

  • Learn from mistakes without fear of failure

  • Build positive relationships with themselves and others

Every child develops differently, so our goal is not perfection. We provide consistent opportunities to practice, reflect, and grow.

Our Monthly Learning Journey

Each month introduces a new theme that connects mindfulness with a practical learning skill. Children revisit important skills throughout the year in different ways, allowing them to build familiarity and confidence over time.

October 2026: Gratitude & Giving Thanks

Mindfulness Focus: Gratitude - noticing and appreciating the positive
Learning Skill: Organization
Skill Development: Planning, organization, attention to detail, and responsibility

November 2026: Remembrance & Reflection

Mindfulness Focus: Emotional Awareness - recognizing and naming feelings
Learning Skill: Responsibility
Skill Development: Self-awareness, emotional regulation, reflection, and self-monitoring

Children learn that emotions provide information. Through reflection and creative expression, they practice identifying how they feel, understanding their responses, and taking responsibility for their choices.

December 2026: Winter Wonder & Kindness

Mindfulness Focus: Kindness - compassion toward ourselves and others
Learning Skill: Collaboration
Skill Development: Cooperation, patience, perspective-taking, and self-control

Children explore how kindness can be expressed through words, actions, and everyday choices. Collaborative activities give them opportunities to listen, share, take turns, and work toward a common goal.

January 2027: Fresh Starts & New Beginnings

Mindfulness Focus: Worry - learning ways to settle anxious thoughts
Learning Skill: Self-Regulation
Skill Development: Emotional regulation, attention, impulse control, and coping strategies

A new year provides an opportunity to explore change, uncertainty, and fresh beginnings. Children learn practical mindfulness strategies that can help them recognize worry and create space before reacting.

March 2027: Growth & Respect

Mindfulness Focus: Respect - valuing differences and practicing self-respect
Learning Skill: Critical Thinking
Skill Development: Flexible thinking, reasoning, perspective-taking, and problem-solving

Children discover that growth often means being willing to look at something from a different perspective. They are encouraged to ask questions, consider possibilities, and approach challenges with an open mind.

May 2027: Self-Love & Patience

Mindfulness Focus: Self-Love - treating ourselves with understanding and kindness
Learning Skill: Problem-Solving
Skill Development: Patience, persistence, flexible thinking, and resilience

As the school year comes to an end, children reflect on how far they have come. They explore healthy ways to recognize frustration, manage strong emotions, recover from challenges, and keep moving forward.

What Children Experience in Each 90-Minute Session

Each session combines a variety of mindfulness and creative experiences, allowing children to learn through different ways of moving, thinking, creating, and connecting.

1. Mindfulness & Meditation

Age-appropriate breathing, meditation, grounding, and awareness activities help children practice attention and develop greater awareness of their thoughts and emotions.

2. Yoga & Mindful Movement

Movement encourages body awareness, coordination, balance, and opportunities to reset and regulate energy.

3. Journaling & Reflection

Children use writing, drawing, and reflection activities to explore their experiences, thoughts, feelings, goals, and ideas.

4. Art & Creative Expression

Creative projects encourage children to experiment, make choices, express themselves, and approach challenges from different perspectives.

5. Pottery & Weaving

Hands-on projects provide opportunities to practice concentration, sequencing, patience, planning, fine-motor skills, problem-solving, and persistence.

A Program That Grows With Your Child

The activities and expectations are adapted to be developmentally appropriate for different age groups.

Whether your child is learning how to identify their emotions, developing greater independence, navigating friendships, managing frustration, or becoming more confident in solving complex problems, our program provides opportunities to practice skills at their own level.

We want children to leave each session with more than something they have created.

We want them to leave with a new strategy, a new insight, a sense of accomplishment, and greater confidence in themselves.
